I had my hair cut at the Hair Garden and love it :D . I was open to a different style and left it to Jennifer. She gave me the perfect hair cut for my wash and go lifestyle while still looking feminine. Highly recommended.

Hi~

I wanted to give a huge thumbs up to Jennifer at Hair Garden for not only her expertise with cutting and colouring but also her generous spirit and kind heart. As well as being blessed with illness and pain in my body (keeping me humble  ), I have weird hair with curls and a wave =P~ . Jennifer tried so hard to work with my hair and in the end we just cut it short  And although my head has been very cold in this weather, I have received many compliments and will be returning to her as soon as I can for a colour. :D

Thank you Jennifer for everything. I wish you much success in your business and good luck on A Channel. I will tape the show and hope after that broadcast you still have time for me.

Happy New Year!

First time mentioned in Martlet article!

Naked poets leave impression

Strong Cottonwoods walked on the stage to a crowd of confused and slightly irritated faces. He was dressed to the nines compared to the other performers. In fact, he was just plain dressed.

Someone from the audience rose to object and finally asked the question that everyone else was pondering over: why does he have clothes on? Or more accurately, why isn’t he naked?

The audience didn’t have to ponder long, as halfway through his poem Cottonwoods let his clothing drop to the floor as though he wasn’t wearing them in the first place. Of course, by then, the audience was used to such a sight. The group had seen Cottonwoods (and seven other local poets) bare their flesh and hearts — to use the words of host Dave Morris.

This year’s “Poetry in the Raw” — a slam poetry reading where the poets shed their clothes and act out their pieces wearing nothing but the stage and spotlight — performed its second rotation in Victoria last week.

The theme this year was “cover.” First, the poets read covers of other’s works, ranging from Canadian slam poetry champion Brendan McLeod to experienced spoken-word performer William Shatner. Following that, the poets took to the stage with their own pieces.

“Poetry is you being naked, you in the raw . . . sharing who you are,” said Kristy Westendorp, member of the Victoria Slam team, of the nudity.

But there’s more to being naked than just not having any clothes on. And it was more than just the poets that were sharing.

Morris lead the audience through his journey toward his first sojourn into public nudity, and invited audience members to share the experience. Many were so inclined to join Morris they defied his “one step at a time” policy, and took clothes off as they pleased rather than waiting for his brief introductions where he would announce both the next poet and the next piece of clothing that would be collectively removed.

The first poem was written by Morris, but was covered by Westendorp, and dealt with the very situation Morris was going through on stage: overcoming insecurities through trust. And it was a trusting atmosphere; whether that was displayed through the audience’s willingness to throw themselves into the same boat as the performer or through the generally respective tone they emitted.

The atmosphere was so trusting that Jen Davies, who had recently given birth, stood naked on the stage to announce the winner of a draw for services courtesy of The Hair Garden Salon.

The themes were numerous. Missie Peters, producer of the event and Westendorp’s fellow Victoria Slam Team member, wrote of the hassles and cover-ups of everyday work life. Meanwhile, Jane Bee wrote about the triangular relationship between her, her children and the current world state.

For her own piece, Westendorp walked onto the stage eating a piece of cake, which (she later assured everyone) was vegan. Her approach to the theme of cover dealt with the fact that she wanted to show that everyone is different under their clothes; something often forgotten in the days of fad diets and eating disorders. To prove this, standing stark naked before reading, she ate.

For Westendorp, writing a poem about body image came from the dilemma that she could either lose 15 pounds or write a body acceptance piece. Considering losing 15 pounds could hardly be shared with a group of poetry lovers, it seemed like she’d made the right choice. Plus, she said, losing 15 pounds wouldn’t have been as fun.

All the proceeds from the event go towards sending the Victoria Slam Team to the nationals.

"Going Green" the Chemical Free Nursery!

I remember what my mother said to me when I was nesting right before Garnet was born 5 1/2 months ago." A breast and a drawer thats all baby's need when they come into this world." I was mortified, shocked! I guess thats all she did for me stick me in a drawer and pull out her boob.
But my mom has a point. Those matching bumper pads and hand-embroidered Roman blinds and teddy bears all in a row are not really that important. When you consider all the chemicals coming off of the bumper pads, new paint, carpet and plastic toys from china. Lead, (VOCs) and polyurethane foam, BFR chemicals you start to really wonder is this why we have a higher rate of Cancer?
But, there are alternatives now! Green alternatives, healthy alternatives! IKEA does not use fire retardants in any of their mattresses or furniture, organic cotton supplies for cribs are available at www.sagecreeknaturals.com and www.grassrootsstore.com. Also, Willow Natural Home is a B.C. company that stocks every possible option for natural nursery gear. Check out www.willownaturalhome.com.
Diapers what a horrible invention, they do not breakdown in a landfill and they are immersed with cancer causing chemicals. Yuk!
There is an alternative!!!!!!!! G Diapers you can order them online or buy them at London Drugs, Mothering Touch in Victoria B.C. Here is the website http://www.gdiapers.com/
You will love them!

  • no elemental chlorine
  • no perfumes
  • no plastic layer
  • no inks or dyes
  • no latex
  • no garbage, no guilt
Garnet just woke up, so I have to go now but I will talk to you soon. Have a great day and have fun being "GREEN" :) Jenn and Garnet

POETRY In The RAW!

POETRY IN THE RAW: COVERED

For the second year in a row local poets are going raw. It's the annual fundraiser for the Victoria Slam Team: bigger, better, and just as naked! Come out and support as local poets bare their souls...and a whole lot more!

Come see some the most inspiring spoken word show of the year.

Poetry in the Raw is a fundraiser. It will help Peters, Thompson, Kristy, and one other poet raise cash to compete in a national poetry slam competition in Calgary, held in November as part of the Canadian Festival of the Spoken Word. (Victoria hosts the Canadian Festival of the Spoken Word in 2009, by the way. )

Evening free, a night out! "Slam poets" who recite at open-mic poetry performances at Solstice. The series, happening every second and fourth Thursday of the month, is called Tongues of Fire.

"I had such a great night! The Hair Garden Salon was a sponsor for the Poetry in the Raw and I would have to say I have never felt so moved, emotional, and free!
"First time for me attending an evening of Poetry, and I am hooked"

"When the poet is nude, she said, the body becomes an integral part of the performance."

"Amazing, gut wrenching, liberating, therapeutic and absolutely wonderful"

'Missie

Missie Peters and Steven J. Thompson will be doffing their duds to read their poetry. How does it feel? "Unbelievably empowering," says Peters, whose day job is working as a government public relations officer.

Thank you Barbara for believing in me! Wedding hair 2008!

Barbara and I met at the Sidney Pier Hotel on the day of her wedding. We hit it off immediately, started to talk about the universe and the law of attraction. I am so grateful to have met such a warm, and generous person! Barbara surprised me with a fountain that I absolutely fell in love with when I worked at the Pier hotel for a friend while she needed some help. I briefly mentioned that I loved the spa's fountain. Barbara put that little piece of information away in her mind. In about a week when I went to the spa to pick up my check, their was the fountain wrapped up waiting for me. Barbara bought the same fountain for my Hair Garden Salon. I was speechless! Thank you Barbara for believing in me!

Here are some more wedding photo's!

Here are some more wedding pictures of my wonderful client and friend! We all had so much fun on that special day!

"I LOVE WEDDING HAIR!"

Do I ever love wedding hair! So many people ask me why do you love wedding hair? Do you get many Bridzilla's? Isn't wedding hair the most stressful time for everyone?
My answer to all these questions is I love everything about wedding hair! If the bride is freaking out all I do is ask them how did you meet your fiancee? I just get their mind focused on their relationship. I also generally see them a week before, so I can do a consult with them and create the perfect wedding style for their special day! I think what I like most about wedding hair is that I create a masterpiece, a one and only style that is for you and you only, for your special day! I will travel to your home or hotel, I am a portable wedding stylist! See you on your wedding day!

Eco- Gals turn Pin up Girls for a day!

I finally pulled it off, the Pin up photo shoot I've always wanted! Everything all fell into place! The models, the make up artist, the photographer, the hair, the mood, the eyelashes and of course the salon! I started Dakota's hair at 12pm and her no ammonia color turned out awesome, and then all the other models arrived the make up artist and we started to create our pin up masterpieces!
Each model started to transform into a Vargas pin up girls, the make up was perfect. The eyebrows where dark and shaped, the lips red like cherry's. Each curl that I pinned was polished and smooth. We then finished the hair, make up and dress by 5:30pm and started to capture our pin ups in action. Oh my was it fun! We laughed so hard, the gals all went into character and we had a blast! Walking around with martini glasses filled with water, we girls just wanna have fun! We would love everyone to enjoy the pictures , we sure had fun creating them! GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK

So what does it mean to be an environmentalist now, if it's not just for science types and hippies anymore?
Well I care for the planet, our health, and the future of our world! I would like my son to enjoy a world free from allergies, cancers and pollution.
Four years ago I became very sick, I was working in a salon full time as a senior colorist and developed psoriasis. I had red scales up both arms, on my face, chest, back and legs. The scales burned, itched and I felt ugly. The doctor recommended that I go on sick leave for a week, so I did. The psoriasis started to clear up. I felt great! I went back to work, and symptoms returned. I realized that I was allergic to either the shampoos or the color. I left the salon and started working as a Hair Instructor, I noticed that when I was around the color I was finding that my nose would itch, my eyes would burn and I would find the occasional psoriasis. I was an instructor for a year. Now I am allergy free and working full time as a Hairstylist and salon owner of an Eco-friendly salon! Yeah!
